How to choose the right Christmas tree height

The most common Christmas tree mistake is buying one that's too tall. Here's how to get it right first time.

Start with your ceiling

Measure from the floor to the ceiling where the tree will stand, then take off about 30cm. That leaves room for a star or topper and stops the tree looking squashed.

  • 7.5ft–8ft ceiling (most UK homes): a 6ft or 7ft tree
  • 9ft ceiling: a 7ft or 8ft tree
  • High ceilings, hallways and stairwells: 8ft to 10ft
  • Flats, bedrooms and offices: 5ft, or a slim 6ft

Then think about width

Height isn't the whole story. A full tree can be well over a metre wide at the base, so check the floor space too. If you're short on room, a slim pencil tree gives you the height without taking over the corner.
